Better safe than sorry! It’s a good idea to be insured if you organise activities. Let’s go over some of the most common insurance policies for associations and organisations.

Every policy is different, every type of insurance has exclusions and being double insured is not always to your advantage. Make sure that you understand what is, and is not, insured in the policy you take out.

Compulsory insurances for organisations:

  • If you work with volunteers: civil liability insurance for volunteers.
  • If you work with Article 17 employees (often still called ‘verenigingswerkers'): occupational accident insurance as you would take out for employees.
  • If you manage or use a building that is accessible by the public: objective liability insurance for fire and explosion.
  • If you have employees: occupational accident insurance (please note, you do not need this type of insurance for people who work for you via a SBK (social office for artists) or a temp agency, those agencies arrange the insurance for them).
  • If you or the non-profit organisation own a vehicle: car insurance.
  • als jij of je vzw een wagen bezit: autoverzekering
  • Other insurance may also be obligatory depending on the activities your organisation undertakes.

Other insurances you may need when organising something:

  • Fire insurance (buildings and/or contents insurance).
  • Civil liability operation insurance: if you run a venue or a bar
  • Theft insurance for materials (owned or borrowed).
  • Comprehensive insurance for materials (owned or borrowed).
  • Legal insurance.
  • Extra (cancellation) insurance when organising events.
  • Insurance for the costs of cancelling or postponing concerts, performances, productions and festivals.
  • Travel insurance.
