Dramaturgy for dancers (in collaboration with Charleroi danse)

Full / waiting list

Many young dancers and choreographers are skilled in developing their own dance vocabulary, creating movement material, and exploring a specific theme. Yet they often ask: “How do I bring my ideas together into an engaging and cohesive whole that captivates the audience from start to finish?”

Dramaturgy is often barely touched upon in dance training programmes, even though it plays a crucial role in shaping a meaningful performance. But what exactly does dramaturgy mean in dance? And how can dramaturgical thinking help you give your work more direction and expressiveness?
During this five-day, unconventional introduction to dramaturgical thinking and practice, we will explore these questions together. Each day will focus on different topical issues in contemporary dance and performance.

How can dramaturgy emerge from the bodies rather than from outside intellectual concepts?
Where do dramaturgy and artistic research overlap?
How can a dramaturg set processes in motion in dialogue with and independently of choreographers?
How is dramaturgical thinking reshaping the hierarchies of the working process and the existing artistic production models?

Designed for practitioners in the field, the seminar aims to bridge theory and practice, and to offer concrete tools and strategies, both embodied and discursive, they can apply to their own artistic work.

Workshop in collaboration with Charleroi Danse.

Programme

Day 1. Dramaturgies of the horizontal work process: a card game for setting up common shared values and redistributing responsibilities within a work group.

Day 2. Embodied dramaturgies for the collective body: a physical practice exploring the possibility to move from a non-individual agency.

Day 3. Mapping as a dramaturgical method: written and visual reflection around five different elements of a work: content, form, context, relations and references.

Day 4. Research dramaturgy, production dramaturgy, and emancipated dramaturgy: exploring various types of involvement of the dramaturg through case studies.

Day 5. Dramaturgy of transnational collaborations: collective reading that opens the dialogue around working conditions and inequalities of cultural, political and financial nature.

For whom?

For anyone working in contemporary dance who creates performances grounded in research, social, or artistic engagement.

Teacher

Yasen Vasilev is a dramaturge, critic, and creator, trained at the theatre academies of Sofia and Shanghai. Today, he works in the field of contemporary dance and performance.

Since 2018, Yasen has been a regular contributor to *Springback* magazine, a collaborator of Belgian choreographer Ehsan Hemat, and co-founder of *Radar Sofia*, a residency space for playwrights and artists in precarious or at-risk situations.

His Master’s thesis practical research on the politics of dance, NUTRICULA (2015–), has been developed and presented internationally in the form of workshops and performances that aim to test and reimagine the limits of the body.

IMPOSSIBLE ACTIONS, a collective piece for 10+ participants born out of this research, was first produced by Radar Sofia in 2021 and continues as an ongoing project, activated by local performers and institutions in various contexts.
