Fresh talent on the dancefloor: Meet Bavo!
Four weeks ago, Bavo joined the Danspunt team as a communications officer. He has already settled in nicely. Amidst new experiences and a warm welcome from colleagues, he is gradually establishing his place within the organisation. How did he find those first few weeks and what has struck him so far? He tells the story himself.
Bavo has been dancing for as long as he can remember. For him, dance has always been a place where he can fully be himself and a way to get to know himself better and better. In his role as a communications officer, Bavo wants to pass on the power of dance: telling stories that inspire others to discover their own path through dance, just like he did.
You've been working here for 4 weeks now, how have you experienced these first weeks so far?
Great! Danspunt is a really nice organization with a warm team. I feel like I fit in well here and that I’ve already found my place. So in that sense, it’s been really great! I received a very warm welcome from the entire team. There’s still a lot for me to learn. Both the dance sector and the communications field are completely new to me. I feel like I discover something new every day, which is really nice. I’m given the freedom to learn a lot and to grow. Of course, it can feel a bit overwhelming at times, but I also have to say that I’m truly given the time to explore everything. I definitely don’t feel like I’m expected to know everything right away. I really get the time to discover things and make them my own.
What has your new team taught you so far?
I learn a lot from my colleagues. I’m someone who regularly asks for feedback. What’s nice about Danspunt is that everyone has a strong opinion, which means they can give me valuable feedback. For example, I’ve already learned not to put too much text in my Instagram posts, a small beginner’s mistake 😉.
I’ve also noticed that collaboration is very important here. Everyone works on different projects, but there’s a lot of overlap, so joining forces as a team is essential. We also try to attend performances and events together as much as possible, which really creates a strong sense of group spirit.
What unwritten rules have you discovered at Danspunt?
Let me think. I’d say I’m usually the one who arrives last at the office, but also the one who leaves last! Late lunches are definitely a thing here too, something I had to get used to at first. I usually had lunch at 12 but here it’s more like 1 p.m. or even later. The advantage is that the afternoon flies by.
If you were a dance style, which one would you be?
If I were a dance style, I’d say I would be the style I practice myself: Femme Fusion. It’s a mix of different dance styles that originate from the worlds of Vogue Femme and Waacking. It’s a very diverse style with lots of self-expression, which really suits me. It also has a strong diva energy. While I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a diva, I definitely appreciate the diva-energy!
