Physical Gospel: a research into the subconscious, using movement and melody as the tool
We are looking for: backing vocalists with an interest in Soul, RnB, Jazz, movement and a deep-dive in bringing this together into a spiritual practice.
Duration: 6 months (october 2023 - march 2024)
Context:
Singer and theatre-creator Adja Fassa is organizing a 6 month residency in collaboration with De Centrale (Gent) to dive deeper into her practice she calls ‘Physical Gospel’, that ties in with her music project (under the name Adja).
Combining voice (melody and harmonization), breathwork and movement (inspired by yoga as well as contemporary dance), she is curious about the development of a practice, a ritual, with the aim of bringing oneself closer to their own subconscious and eventually, closer to each other. She uses the word ‘Gospel’ to refer to the spiritual practice of singing (together).
Residency:
For this chapter of the research, the ambition is to find potential backing vocalists who resonate with the existing music, as well as with this unfolding approach to creation. The residency will be divided into 2 parts:
the workshop (oct-nov): this is for the participants to discover this practice, no strings attached. It’s meant for vocalists who are interested in the position of becoming long-term backing vocalists to this project, in order to get to know the ‘Physical Gospel’-practice and see if this part of the project resonates with them too. It’s a trial-period for everyone, including Adja who will be guiding the workshop. Her main focus will be to integrate your feedback, so she can continue to develop her practice towards something that works for the individual as well as the group.
production-phase (dec-march): after the workshop, gears will be shifted to trying out this practice within a production-phase of a new single-release in collaboration with the label Sdban Records. The intention is a long-term collaboration, with a studio-recording and concert as the first experience together. The production-phase exists out of:

(preparation for) filming of a concert film (february)
(preparation for) concert (march)
If all of this sounds like a big engagement - that’s because it will be! Therefore, we aspire to give you back as much as you put into it, hopefully providing you with an experience that fills the soul and brings you closer to music and oneself. The long-term aim is to continue a collaboration for Adja’s following album, next year (2025).
Profile:
- you are a professional vocalist/singer or have ample vocal experience
- you are passionate about Soul, RnB and/or Jazz and vocal harmonization
- you are looking for a possible long-term commitment as a backing vocalist
- a professional dance-background is a plus, but not needed. A willingness and comfort with moving and expressing yourself through movement, on and off stage is required.
- you are somewhat acquainted with the necessary flexibility an organization needs from you to be able to plan residencies, rehearsals and other production- or performance matters. We are a large team of 8 musicians, a crew for technical and production support and management support, soon to be welcoming 4 to 8 vocalists. Although we adapt to everyone’s agenda as much as possible, some flexibility and prioritization on the side of the participant will be required.

Physical Gospel: een onderzoek in het onderbewuste, via melodie en beweging.
We zijn op zoek naar: achtergrondzangeressen met een interesse in Soul, R&B, Jazz, beweging en een diepe duik nemen in het samenbrengen hiervan in een spirituele praktijk.
Periode: 6 maanden (oktober 2023 - maart 2024)
Context:
Zangeres en theatermaker Adja Fassa organiseert in samenwerking met De Centrale (Gent) een residentie van 6 maanden om dieper te duiken in haar praktijk die ze 'Physical Gospel' noemt en die aansluit bij haar muziekproject (onder de naam Adja).
Ze combineert stem (melodie en harmonisatie), ademwerk en beweging (geïnspireerd door zowel yoga als hedendaagse dans) en is nieuwsgierig naar de ontwikkeling van een praktijk, een ritueel, met als doel jezelf dichter bij je eigen onderbewustzijn te brengen en uiteindelijk ook dichter bij elkaar. Het woord 'Gospel' wordt gebruikt om te verwijzen naar de spirituele praktijk van het (samen) zingen.
Residentie:
Voor dit hoofdstuk van het onderzoek is de ambitie om potentiële achtergrondzangers te vinden die resoneren met de bestaande muziek en met deze ontvouwende benadering tot creatie. De residentie bestaat uit 2 delen:
de workshop (okt-nov): deze is bedoeld voor de deelnemers om vrijblijvend kennis te maken met de praktijk. Het is bedoeld voor vocalisten die geïnteresseerd zijn in een positie als achtergrondzangeres bij dit project, op lange termijn, om de 'Physical Gospel'-praktijk te leren kennen en te zien of dit deel van het project ook bij hen aanslaat. Het is een proefperiode voor iedereen, ook voor Adja die de workshop zal begeleiden. Haar belangrijkste focus zal zijn om jullie feedback te integreren, zodat ze haar praktijk verder kan ontwikkelen naar iets dat werkt voor zowel het individu als de groep.
productiefase (dec-maart): na de workshop wordt de focus verlegd naar het uitproberen van deze praktijk binnen een productiefase van een nieuwe single-release in samenwerking met het label Sdban Records. De bedoeling is een samenwerking op lange termijn, met een studio-opname en concert als eerste gezamenlijke ervaring. De productiefase bestaat uit:

Klinkt dit alles als een groot engagement? Want dat zal het zeker zijn! Daarom streven we ernaar om je net zoveel terug te geven als wat je erin stopt en je hopelijk met een ervaring te voorzien die je ziel vervult en je dichter bij muziek en jezelf brengt. Het langetermijndoel is om de samenwerking voort te zetten voor Adja's volgende album, volgend jaar (2025).
Profiel:
- je bent een professionele zanger/zangeres of hebt ruime zangervaring
- je hebt een passie voor Soul, R&B en/of Jazz en vocale harmonisatie
je bent op zoek naar een mogelijke langdurige verbintenis als achtergrondzangeres
- een professionele dansachtergrond is een plus, maar niet nodig. Wel de bereidheid en het comfort om te bewegen en jezelf uit te drukken door middel van beweging, op en naast het podium.
- je bent enigszins bekend met de noodzakelijke flexibiliteit die een organisatie van je vraagt om residenties, repetities en andere productie- of uitvoeringszaken te kunnen plannen. We zijn een groot team van 8 muzikanten, met bijkomend een crew voor technische en productionele ondersteuning, management en binnenkort 4 tot 8 vocalisten. Hoewel we ons zoveel mogelijk aanpassen aan ieders agenda, zal enige flexibiliteit en prioritering langs de kant van de deelnemer vereist zijn.
